The Unfallen are great diplomats and often form the core of strong alliances.

Invading an Unfallen player is never fun, even with superior firepower. However they can unlock ‘Guardian’ anomalies on any world, which provide buffs to Unfallen in ground combat, and typically have huge manpower reserves. Their ships have lots of hp but not as many attack slots as normal. Unfallen’s whole military philosophy lean towards defense. This (along with slow expansion in general) is the big weakness that constrains this faction. So their expansion is geometrically constrained by the map, which can be especially frustrating if they start in an isolated position (far end of an arm in a spiral galaxy). If the vine network between the capital and an outlying system is snipped by sustained blockade, that entire part of the network and all planets are lost. Unfallen are very vulnerable to losing control of their capital system. They are immune to normal culture flipping (eg empire or nakalim). As with colonization, they can’t conquer unless the target system is within vine range. They can use this to eat up unsuspecting allies very quickly. On top of that, they can assimilate systems with vines on them.

Unfallen are immune to normal culture flipping.

The flip side is that they need to expand vine networks everywhere, which requires a big investment in vine ship fleets (4-5 gets the job done quickly) and escorts. They can also colonize planets for free and are the best terraformers. They have some of the best growth and production modifiers in game, including Unfallen and Guardian pop bonus, quest unlocks and unique tech.

The Unfallen are great at peaceful, economic strategies that combine top tier influence and solid production, usually leaning towards alliance strategies.
